How AI can help you in everyday life after 50
When I started learning AI, I assumed it was mainly a work tool. Something for reports and meetings and emails.
It took me a while to realise how useful it is outside work too.
Here are the everyday uses that have made the most difference to me.
Planning and organising
Any task with moving parts — a house move, a family event, a big trip, a home renovation — AI can help you think through the structure, the timeline, and the things you’re likely to forget.
“I’m planning X. I have Y weeks and Z budget. Help me create a step-by-step plan with a realistic timeline.”
Dealing with bureaucracy
Insurance claims. Complaint letters. Appeals to HMRC or the council. Anything where you need to write firmly and clearly to an organisation that doesn’t want to help you.
AI is remarkably good at this. It knows the right tone, the right structure, and the right things to say to get results.
Understanding complex documents
Contracts, pension statements, mortgage documents, medical letters. Paste them in (redacting any sensitive personal details) and ask: “Explain this in plain English. What are the key things I need to know? What should I be concerned about?”
Making better decisions
Big purchases. Career moves. Family decisions.
“I’m trying to decide between X and Y. Here are the factors: [list them]. What am I not thinking about? What are the risks I might be underestimating?”
It won’t make the decision for you. But it will help you think more clearly about it.
Learning new things
“Explain [topic] as if I’m intelligent but know nothing about it. Then tell me what I should read or watch to go deeper.”
I’ve used this for everything from understanding investment options to learning about a medical condition to getting up to speed on an industry I knew nothing about.
The honest summary
AI doesn’t replace judgment or experience. It supplements it. Think of it as a very knowledgeable, very patient thinking partner who is available at 11pm when you’re trying to figure something out.
